WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Congressman Steve Pearce introduced legislation to establish the Lesser Prairie Chicken Habitat Preservation Area in Chaves County through a land exchange with the NM State Land office and BLM.  The bill creates a habitat preservation area for two threatened species, while also balancing economic development considerations.

“The Sand Ranch Preservation Area is the best available place to view the prairie chicken and dune lizard,” said Pearce. “My legislation would ensure that land remained protected while also opening up an area to relocating the Union Pacific Railroad feuling station from El Paso to Dona Ana County.  That’s going create a number of jobs for the district.”

The legislation is officially known as the Lesser Prairie Chicken National Habitat Preservation Area and Land Exchange Act, H.R. 3930.
