Organ Mountains
Congressman Pearce's legislation to establish the Organ Mountains as a national monument, HR 995, goes the legislative route to allow for public input. The purpose of this legislation is to preserve the ecological integrity, livestock, watershed and educational resources in the monument area. 54,800 acres are protected from any sort of mineral exploration/leasing and mining, while still allowing for motorized vehicles on roads designated for use by the management plan. Additionally, this bill protects water rights, access for sportsmen to hunt, and permits grazing. Additionally, law enforcement and other emergency personnel are granted “unfettered access” to the monument. A copy of the bill and a map of the monument area are attached.
