PEARCE INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO HONOR EDWIN L. MECHEM
Washington, DC (March 14, 2013) – Today, U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce reintroduced H.R. 1166, a bill to “designate the United States courthouse located at 100 North Church Street in Las Cruces, New Mexico, as the Edwin L. Mechem United States Courthouse.”
“Edward Mechem was an iconic and respected leader who devoted well over a decade to serving our state,” said Pearce. “I am proud to again sponsor this legislation to honor his memory and his legacy of public service. Governor Mechem spent over a decade serving his beloved state, and will always be remembered by the people of New Mexico.”
Pearce originally introduced this legislation in the 112th Congress, and it passed the House of Representatives in July of 2012.
Mechem’s widow, Josephine Mechem, wrote to Congressman Pearce of her late husband: “In every job from State Representative to Governor to Senator to Federal Judge, he felt honored to give of himself in long, hard hours of work, deadlines, pressure and all aspects of service to his beloved state. He brought tremendous integrity and a fine and valued intellect. But most importantly, his fundamental being was intertwined with New Mexico as was so evident in his devotion to its people, its land, its history and its future. There could be no better champion for New Mexico than him.”
